What Makes Me Special?

There are a lot of nights where I find myself laying in bed, thinking, “What makes me special? Why should I keep working hard if someone else is better at [Insert Topic Here]?”

A lot of people give up on their dreams because someone told them negative things about their dream. “You’re not smart enough for that, you are not athletic, you can’t draw.” These negative thoughts can start to cloud your mind as you work towards your goal. You start to think, “yeah, they’re right, I am not good enough. I’ve been working on this for so long, and I’ve gotten nowhere.” I done this myself. Sure, they sometimes don’t have to say anything for you to know. You can see it in their expressions. “It’s not the best I’ve seen.”

All the greats in history did not achieve what they did because one day they woke up and knew what they were doing. Many were apprentices, nobodies, who practiced each day to become great. Practice makes perfect is a great expression, but practice makes progress is better when it comes to chasing dreams. Never give up because someone doesn’t believe in you. Do what makes you happy. Do it as you are, raw and new to the experiences ahead. That’s how you get going. An athlete doesn’t become an Olympian overnight, it takes practice and patience.

You are trying, and that’s the first step towards achieving those dreams. That’s what makes you special.
