Creating a Witchsona

I’ve been a fan of the art prompts the tumblr art community create for a while now.

Take, for example, Witchsona week. The inspiration started as an idea to celebrate the first full moon of the year. During that week, you work on deciding what type of witch you are. (For more information, here is the site that inspired me: witchsona.tumblr.com )

Kinda neat, right?

I’ve enjoyed many stories with witches in them: Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, Soul Eater, etc., etc. So I thought it would be kind of fun to think up one for myself, and share the process here!

Try answering a question a day through the week and before you know it you’ll have your own witchsona!

What Type of Magic Would You Use?

If I were a witch, and had the ability to specialize in a type of magic, what would it be? This is kinda a soul-searching type of question really.

Where would the magic be coming from? Is it from the earth, your soul, an animal, or otherworldly? Is it based off your favorite fandom? These were a few of the thoughts that ran through my head as I realized that I wanted mine to be inspired by my experiences in real life, and picked the earth for myself.

How Would You Use Magic?

Or, what type of job would you have if you had magic to assist you? Would you use it to make wands? To do deliveries? Maybe to scare kids on Halloween? Though this isn’t needed per se for the challenge, I do think that this question helps set up a soft world and possibly a scene to draw for witchsona.

In truth, I think I would be a potion maker. It’s the easiest way to be a “jack-of-all-trades” type of witch, which I feels fits me best. I could make excellent herbal tea to help people feel better, or possibly go out in the forest and use the potions to help the flora and fauna that lived in it. It’s perfect for me! Plus, I’ve work in a chemistry lab, and know a lot about herbs, so I’m already halfway there.

Also, if I had magic, I would love playing tricks and teasing my friends. Which means I would be a casual arcane trickster as well. So it makes sense that I would have a couple of spirit familiars to help me with those tricks. Especially if it can help me work on my potions.

Where Would You Live?

Would you be from the city or live on the skirts of a village? Maybe live in mushroom swamp filled with spirits and ghosts, or a world full of mechanical wonders? Or maybe it’s modern day, but you keep your powers hidden?

Figuring this out will help you with the next question. And helps a bit more with the soft world building and knowing what you might what to create in the scene if you’re going for a big illustration.

What Type of Outfit Would You Wear?

Would you go for more of the traditional style for witches? Or would you wear outfits similar to what you wear now? Would you put runes on you? Would it be based off an aesthetic you really enjoy?

In the end, this is just a fun little idea. If you like the idea of your witch being like Glenda from Wizard of Oz, I say go for it.

What were your results?

Put all those ideas together and what do you got?!

So…yeah. This was a lot of fun to work on. Not only did it help me do a little soul-searching, but it helped me learn how to create a character. What would motivate the character? Would that show in their everyday attire?

So even if you’re not a big fan of creating alternate versions of yourself, this could be a fun way to do almost a kinda crossover of some of your favorite characters in your favorite book, tv series, or movie at the moment. Or just a fun prompt to try your character creating skills. You never know, it might be the inspiration you need for your next role play character!

Haha, now that my geeky side is showing, I’m going to end the post here with my finished piece below!

Thank you guys for reading and I hope you have a great weekend!

EDIT: Thought it was about time to do an update on my Witchsona!

(This is about a three year difference since creating the original.)
